Indigenous Women Standing for Rights and Community

From protesting to building tiny houses, Indigenous women are the on the front-lines of change. Below are 2 posts illustrating their courage.

Women are the Face of Mohawk Resistance

Christopher Curtis, Montreal Gazette, March 1, 2020

https://popularresistance.org/women-are-the-face-of-mohawk-resistance/

On the front lines of the Indigenous resistance movement, it is young women — born after the 1990 Oka Crisis — who are taking a stand.

Kanesatake — Brigitte Rice had been on her feet for 24 hours by Tuesday morning, hoisting the Warrior flag in one hand and using the other to slow traffic into Mohawk territory.

She came to the blockade Monday to “hold it down” for the protesters arrested for stopping rail traffic in Tyendinaga that morning. Hours after the raid, Rice was among the dozens of Mohawks on the front lines in Kanesatake, sealing off access to the reserve to show solidarity with her sister community.

? and ☮️ for International Women’s Day

March 8th, 2020, is International Women’s Day.

This year, leading up to the day, on the day of, and even the day after, we see planned protests around the world saying “Enough!” to violence and gender inequality.

The passion for this change comes from escalating violence and a collective heart conscious desire for Love and peace.

When I met my guides through a reading in 2011, I asked, “What happened? Why was my life so chaotic?”

I was told that I had learned what doesn’t work, and that now the process of coming to balance — forgiveness of self — letting go sorrow, shame, blame, anger, fear, the lack of self-love and self-worth, all judgement, was at hand.

This is our Ascension, a time of Karmic Dispensation and creation of Heaven on Earth.

Mexican Women Try the Power of Silence

A woman holds a candle in protest in Mexico City, February 22, 2020, Reuters

In quiet protest of gender violence, many women plan a one-day retreat from public life March 9.

Their temporary absence might bring permanent change.

By the Monitor’s Editorial Board, Christian Science Monitor, February 27, 2020

https://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/the-monitors-view/2020/0227/Mexican-women-try-the-power-of-silence

On March 9, much of Mexico will become very quiet.

The silence, in fact, is meant to be full of meaning, like a purposeful pause that provokes the conscience.

On that date – coming a day after International Women’s Day with all of its street demonstrations worldwide – millions of women and girls in Mexico plan to simply withdraw from all public life.

Known by the hashtag #UnDiaSinNosotras (#ADayWithoutUs), this 24-hour retreat from schools, workplaces, stores, public transport – even the internet – is not really a national strike. It is backed by the government and many businesses. Much of the male-dominated establishment actually supports the purpose of this mass nonaction: a mute rejection of femicide or other violence against women because they are women.

In a statement, Mexico’s Business Coordinating Council urged companies to allow female workers to stay home in hopes that everyone would support solutions to the problem. “We have all failed as a society,” the statement read.

Mexico still has one of the world’s highest rates of gender-based violence, which stands in contrast to its progress in other areas, such as more female political leaders. (About half of the president’s cabinet are women while Mexico City has its first elected female mayor.) In addition, about 90% of femicides do not result in a conviction, according to Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission.

Past protests against femicide have done little to change attitudes in Mexico despite laws to prevent such violence.

Women’s groups organizing the “stay home” day decided that an alternative tactic was necessary. They hope the withdrawal and silence of women will speak louder than angry demonstrations.

There is a good precedent. In Iceland 45 years ago, 90% of women took a “day off” from both work and housework to protest the low representation of women in government. Their one-day absence made men’s hearts grow fonder. The country began to implement egalitarian policies. Five years later, Iceland became the world’s first country with a democratically elected female president.

Sometimes quiet protest can bring thundering results. Mexico’s day off could finally force the changes needed to keep women safe.

March 9th – Women in Mexico Withdraw for Gender Rights

“No women in offices or schools. No women in restaurants or stores. No women on public transportation, in cars or on the street.

“A country without women, for one day.

Fed up with escalating gender-based attacks and murders, activists called for a daylong national strike by women to demand greater support for their rights.

MEXICO CITY — No women in offices or schools. No women in restaurants or stores. No women on public transportation, in cars or on the street.

A country without women, for one day.

That’s the vision of an alliance of feminist groups in Mexico that — fueled by the rising violence against women and girls, including two horrific murders that appalled the nation this month — have called for a 24-hour strike by the country’s female population on March 9.

The action is to protest gender-based violence, inequality and the culture of machismo, and to demand greater support for women’s rights.

Promoted under the hashtag #UNDÍASINNOSOTRAS, A Day Without Us, it has gained extraordinary momentum across this country of more than 120 million, with wide-ranging buy-in from the public and private sectors, civic groups, religious leaders and many, if not most, women.

The support has cut across the boundaries of class, ethnicity, wealth and politics that fracture this nation, and has given organizers hope that this might be not just a monumental event but also a watershed moment in the modern history of Mexico.

International Women’s Day 2020 — Red Hands, Shoes, Masks & Dresses — “Enough Violence!”

EPA

Women in Mexico have been protesting gender violence and inequality for years.

March 9th, the day after International Women’s Day, they are planning something new — mass withdrawal — not going to work for the day.

The latest idea was spurred on by the violent death, February 9, of 25-year-old Ingrid Escamilla.

In 2009, Elina Chauvet began the Red Shoe Installation, shown in the YouTube below, because of the loss of her sister to domestic violence.

Around the world women have been protesting in solidarity.

Russian Advocates Against Domestic Violence Branded ‘Enemies of the Family’

In December 2017, Margarita Gracheva’s husband brutally attacked her. She has since emerged as one of the most high-profile victims of Russia’s epidemic of domestic violence. (Pascal Dumont/CBC)

Warning: This story contains graphic details. There is an invocation for the elimination of domestic violence at end.

By Chris Brown, CBC News, February 25, 2020

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/russia-domestic-violence-1.5437241

Given the savagery of what Margarita Gracheva’s husband did to her, you’d think Russian lawmakers would want to stop it from happening to other women.

Instead, attitudes toward legislating tougher laws on domestic violence remain stuck in another century.

Two years ago, Gracheva’s husband cut off both of her hands, leaving the 27-year-old mother of two mutilated for life.

“I still have pain. It hurts and aches, but you get used to it,” Gracheva told CBC News in her St. Petersburg home, flexing the fingers on her artificial hand, which is attached to her right arm at the wrist.

The black fingers and silver joints give the German-made device an almost skeletal look, but it is dexterous enough for Gracheva to grasp small objects — after some practice.

Her left hand, meanwhile, is wrapped in a bandage and also clearly far from normal, visibly scarred and only partially functioning. But at least it allows her to once again feel her children’s skin.

“I still have a problem [combing] hair,” she said. “But really, happiness is in the little things.”

Gracheva has emerged as one of the most high-profile victims of Russia’s epidemic of domestic violence, and has given a powerful voice to the frustrations felt by women’s advocates who have tried for years to get stronger domestic violence legislation passed.

“There is no law now — nothing exists,” Gracheva said. “There is only help if there are beatings or a dead body. I don’t know how many more tragic cases have to happen for that to change.”

Indigenous Rights and Titles: Land and Water to Slavery

Pipeline Dispute: Ministers, Wet’suwet’en Chiefs Reach Proposed Agreement

The Canadian Press,
March 1, 2020

https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/pipeline-rail-blockade-agreement

SMITHERS, B.C. — A Wet’suwet’en hereditary chief and senior government ministers say they have reached a proposed arrangement in a pipeline dispute that has prompted solidarity protests across Canada in recent weeks.

Federal Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Carolyn Bennett and British Columbia Indigenous Relations Minister Scott Fraser would not give details on the proposal, saying it first has to be reviewed by the Wet’suwet’en people.

Fraser says that while the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline at the heart of the dispute is already approved and underway, the talks have helped develop a protocol to deal with such projects in the future.

Chief Woos, one of the Wet’suwet’en hereditary leaders, says the proposal represents an important milestone for everyone involved.

But he says the hereditary chiefs remain opposed to the pipeline in their traditional territory.

Using Universal Law to Discover Sacred Purpose

The Scales of Justice: the Knowing of Balance, the Gratitude for Gender Equality Within/Without

THE SCALES OF JUSTICE, OF WORTH AND OF THE UNIVERSE, IN BALANCE

I’ve noticed these two words, ‘sacred’ and ‘purpose,’ are not contemplated much, even put in the same sentence, and in my practice as a reader, when I speak of sacred purpose I’m often asked by my clients, “How do I find it?”

On Heavenly Blessings Radio Show in 2013 through Linda Dillon, channel for the Council of Love, Sanat Kumara explained 13 Universal Laws, including the Law of Sacred Purpose. That’s when I began to open up to the possibility, the joyful discovery of sacred purpose.

To give an idea of what sacred purpose is, let me use myself as an example. Part of my sacred purpose, I’ve discovered, is building my website, Voice of Freedom.ca, where I write about how things work in the higher realms, and now, also video about them. It is my joy!

To sustain this website I ask for small monthly subscriptions. I Love the concept of subscriptions. They make sense to me — small amounts from many — a way to work together in community, the beautiful balance of give and receive.

For me to have to courage to ask for subscriptions from my readers, I’ve done much transmutation work with forgiveness of the old grids of judgement, anxiety, control, guilt and my issues of sorrow, shame, anger and fear I associate with making requests for money.

As I process, I find my sacred purpose expands; there is elimination of the lack of self-worth, and I’ve come to a place of trust and non-judgement, in gratitude for the experience.
